My Take on Seattle

Dear fellow readers(the few of you out there!),

After residing in Seattle for less than a week, it's already been an adventure. I love how much public art I've encountered, there are several mosaics, sculptures, murals, and art embedded into the sidewalk! A city with a generous amount of public art would be highly aware of how art is integrated into the fabric of society, and how beneficial of a medium it can be to instill change into the world. Being a progressive area in terms of sustainability on top of it, this is the place for my two passions to merge. Taking this into consideration, I just may have an opportunity to network enough to start a co-op for my thesis project--hopefully, I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Here's some public art I found and loved:

Just because I'm not living in WI anymore, doesn't mean that you are off the hook! I would really, greatly appreciate it if those of you who have not posted your story yet, do so. Thanks!

I'm moving out of state

Just to let my fellow readers know, I'll be moving to Seattle the end of this month. Continue to check up on the blog periodically, because this move doesn't mean I'm done posting (nor that you are off the hook on writing your volunteer story)! I'm incredibly excited about this move and the networking opportunities that I'll encounter. Hopefully this will change the direction of the blog for the positive, and it will allow me to be involved in bigger sustainability projects. :)

I wish more people in the world did niffty stuff like this!

Slowly but surely...

The stories are still trickling in, so continue to read them. They have been quite profound and I enjoy seeing that people are making differences! Thanks! I want all my avid readers to know that I'm moving to Seattle, and will continue this project there. I still have plenty of business cards and postcards for promotion, so hopefully the project will snowball out there...

A Few Profound Quotes

"I believe natural beauty has a necessary place in the spiritual development of any individual or any society. I believe that whenever we destroy beauty, or whenever we substitute something man-made and artificial for a natural feature of the earth, we have retarded some part of man's spiritual growth."
-Rachel Carson

"We have become so preoccupied with power and control over nature that we have lost an important dimension of our being, the disposition of thankfulness, of commemoration, of perceiving and enjoying something for its own sake. Instead of viewing these immediate objects of our environment in terms of their own being, we have come to regard them soley in terms of what they are for us. And to such an exploitative mentality, nature's own voice becomes mute. Approached as material merely, to be worked up and pressed into the service of a self-styled lord of creation, she contains no revelation and no blessing."
-J. Glenn Gray

"...They were unable to find the bars of the cage. If you can't discover what's keeping you in, the will to get out soon becomes confused and ineffectual."
-Daniel Quinn

Friendly Reminder

To those of you that received a piece of art from PROJECT E.A.R.T.H., please don't forget to post your story. It's been over a month since the initial exchange, and at this point I would like to see more stories of what has been done. I appreciate the participation thus far and hope you've gotten a chance to read how others have volunteered! I'm looking forward to the rest, and hope you've found a place for your work of art. :)

Stop watching T.V., and read Ishmael instead!

Daniel Quinn's, Ishmael, will provoke your thinking to the extent of changing your life, and those whom you will tell about it ;). I firmly believe it's a must read in schools-it's as crucial as George Orwell's 1984. Please, please, please read this book. There's also a website, at Ishmael.org. I can't tell you how much this book is going to help me do what I need to do, as it's now my "Bible". With the turn of every page, I became more awed with such a perspective of our world that is unknown to so many...

A thanks to you for the success!

I just wanted to acknowledge those who have volunteered and already written their story. Some beneficial things are definitely happening out there, and I hope you continue to be mindful of the earth after you volunteer. I really appreciate the follow-up and am looking forward to reading more of the stories! Thanks again for making this project happen. :)
